Certain Native American tribes in the Pacific Northwest have long used the reddish-brown bark flakes as a remedy for constipation. Sometimes this mild laxative is paired with a stronger laxative ingredient like aloe vera latex. Certain medical experts also believe Cascara may improve the muscle tone of the walls of the colon.
